Sendeku Shatters Napa-to-Sonoma Course Record
SONOMA, Calif. - (July 18, 2010) - Tesfaye Sendeku of Ethiopia won the 7th Napa-to-Sonoma Wine Country Half Marathon on Sunday morning in convincing fashion by smashing the course record with a time of 1 hour, 3 minutes, 58 seconds. Sendeku, 26, broke Fernando Cabada's course record of 1:04:57, set in 2007, and won $1,000, a Ball Watch and magnum of wine. Kenyan Paul Ngeny, now training in Auburn, Calif., ran with Sendeku for the first 10 miles before Sendeku took charge. Ngeny finished second in 1:04:59, while countryman Edward Kiptum finished third (1:07:25). Sergio Reyes, winner of the last two Wine Country Half Marathons, in Santa Barbara and Healdsburg, finished fifth (1:08:28).
Shaluinn Fullove, 32, of Palo Alto defeated runner-up Lindsay Gardina by 35 seconds, 1:22:39 to 1:23:14. Ashley Carroll of Menlo Park was third (1:23:44). Christine Kennedy, 55, from Los Gatos, finished fourth overall and ran a sterling 1:25:15 as top Master (40 and over). Pamakids, a San Francisco-based running club, won the team competition.
Runners cross the start line at Cuvaison at the 2010 Napa-to-Sonoma Wine Country Half
Runners from all over the world start amongst the vineyards at Cuvaison Carneros Estate Winery in Napa on their way to the grand finish at City Hall in Sonoma Plaza. The course runs through the scenic Carneros wine region from Napa to Sonoma in this world-class destination event. Spectators line the final stretch down Broadway cheering on race participants who then join teammates, friends and family in the plaza for the celebratory Wine & Music Festival featuring the awards ceremony, live music and wine tasting from some of the regions finest vintners.

The 2011 Napa-to-Sonoma Wine Country Half Marathon will be held on Sunday July 17th. Registration is set to open November 1st. The inaugural Oregon Wine Country Half Marathon is scheduled for September 5th on Labor Day weekend. This event features a beautiful course that winds through the Willamette Valley in Yamhill County. The start area is located at expansive Stoller Vineyards and Winery with gorgeous views of the underlying valley. The course winds past orchards, farms and vineyards and finishes in the town of Carlton for the Wine & Music Festival. If you are a wine enthusiast, prepared to be dazzled by the top wineries from Yamhill-Carlton, Chehalem Mountain, and Dundee Hills AVA's who will pouring at the expo, the post-race festival and other event functions. Healdsburg rocks! This course starts at Francis Ford Coppola Winery and finishes at Warm Springs Recreation Area below Lake Sonoma. Over 2,000 runners, many in Halloween attire, run 13.1 miles past 22 wineries and some of the most gorgeous vineyards in world as the colors are turning autumn colors.
